NEW SELF-PROPELLED FORAGE HARVESTERS INTRODUCED BY JOHN DEERE

LENEXA, Kansas (August 23, 2007) — Designed with more power and performance, the 7050 Series Self-Propelled Forage Harvesters (SPFHs) bring increased capacity, faster transport speeds and enhanced operator comfort to assist growers and custom operators who need to cover more acres in less time while producing the best-quality silage.

"All models except the 7850 feature John Deere PowerTech Plus™ engines, which deliver increased power and higher-torque characteristics than our previous models," says Tim Meister, division manager, marketing, John Deere Ottumwa Works. "These engines are more powerful, cleaner-burning and more fuel-efficient to help operators cut and process more crop in less time. The 7850 SPFH is designed with a large 6-cylinder, 15-Liter Cummins Diesel engine which is rated at a working 689 horsepower."

All models are designed with new cooling packages to stand up to the rigorous field conditions and long working hours. A four-section radiator brings more capacity to the system and cooling fans are driven by a power band directly from the engine crankshaft.

"The 7050 Series SPFHs feature a self-cleaning rotary screen for less maintenance under severe harvesting conditions," explains Meister. "The screen is 38 percent larger than previous models and delivers an ample air supply for optimal cooling capacity. It features a segmented brush for active cleaning to provide reliable, safe engine operation in even the toughest conditions."

In-line engine mountings facilitate better visibility, maneuverability and overall machine efficiency. The SPFHs are ballasted and balanced on both axles for safe transportation and field operation. Access to the engine and cooling units is extremely easy and maintenance and service have been simplified. Fuel-tank capacity is 185 gallons on the 7250 and 7350, and 290 gallons on the larger SPFHs. This allows for all-day harvesting without refueling.

"An electronic engine control brings intelligent performance and fuel-saving engine management to the new SPFHs," adds Meister. "This new technology provides appropriate power to all functions, saves fuel, reduces noise levels and ensures safe road transport. It does this all automatically so the operator can focus on cutting and harvesting performance."

The 7050 Series SPFHs are available with two transmission options — the ProDrive hydrostatic transmission and the conventional, three-speed ground drive hydrostatic transmission. The ProDrive system features an automatic range selection for the front axle and an optional hydro-mechanical rear wheel drive for all-wheel drive performance. A high/low torque range allows automatic adjustment to ground conditions when in the field mode. Higher transport speeds of 25 mph are available when in the road mode. This transmission has the best tractive characteristics of any transmission on the market.

The conventional three-speed transmission also features hydrostatic drive with reliable, field-proven components that also are used in John Deere combines. The three-speed transmission is designed with more traction for deep soil or muddy field conditions and exhibits better overall performance, even when harvesting uphill.

"Operator comfort is extremely important for the growers who spend many hours in the cab of these harvesters," says Meister. "We've designed a quiet, spacious cab with easy-to-operate controls to help the operator become even more efficient throughout harvest. Visibility is enhanced and vibrations reduced because of the unique unibody cab frame design."

The CommandArm™ armrest console on the right-hand side integrates all the important SPFH functions in a very convenient location. A multifunction hydrostatic lever controls ground speed and all the header and spout adjustments. The lever is ergonomically designed to fit the operator's hand and can be adjusted to the optimum position to easily move the machine forward, stop and reverse.

The new GreenStar™ 2 display is available and can be easily installed with a simple plug-and-play harness. The SPFHs are prewired for all GreenStar technology including field documentation, mapping and precision guidance. This innovative technology brings even more productivity to the grower.

"The 7050 Series SPFHs are truly intelligent machines with advanced on-board monitoring systems such as the HarvestLab™ Moisture Sensor," explains Meister. "This industry-leading system measures moisture on the go and gives immediate feedback to the operator. Integrated with the infinitely variable length of cut system, AutoLoc automatically adjusts length of cut according to the moisture reading measured by HarvestLab and optimizes length of cut while harvesting."

Crop flow is extremely important to overall harvesting productivity and the new SPFHs are designed with an efficient system to cut and harvest the crop. Radial arc stainless steel feedrolls smoothly deliver the crop to the cutterhead for precise chopping. The Dura-Drum cutterhead with segmented knives cuts the crop into accurate, consistent lengths. A crop accelerator ensures fast and steady throughput for consistent trailer-loading on the go.

"New technology with the monitoring systems combined with field-proven cutterhead performance provides an extremely productive harvesting machine that is easy to adjust and operate," concludes Meister. "The new, more powerful 7050 Series SPFHs allow operators to cover more acres in less time, precisely size and cut the crop, and deliver high-quality silage for feed and storage."
