1950-1969

1957  John Deere adopts strict water-effluent standards - nearly as stringent as those mandated 10 years later by the Illinois Water Board.

1960  Tractor fuel tanks relocated for improved safety, ahead of the radiator and away from the engine.

1962  Company allocates $1.3 million (U.S.) for pollution prevention. Skimmer ponds constructed to control oil pollution at many factories.

1963  Starting interlock for lawn and garden tractors developed.

1965  Decals with international symbols introduced for improved worldwide identification of controls on all product lines.

1966  Roll-over protection devices made available to the industry.

1967  First corporate environmental policy established.

1968  Department of Environmental Control established, responsible for coordinating company-wide pollution-control efforts.
