Updated 950J Crawler Dozer Provides Enhanced Productivity, Uptime

Updated 950J Crawler Dozer Provides Enhanced Productivity, Uptime

MOLINE, Ill. (March 7, 2006)—With numerous improvements and updates to various machine systems, the 950J Crawler Dozer delivers even more productivity and uptime than its predecessor-while still providing the ease of operation and precise maneuverability this 26-metric-ton dozer is known for.

"The 950J retains all of the features that made the previous model the best dozer in its class—the hydrostatic drivetrain, the integral power management system for maximum efficiency, Deere's exclusive Auto-Trac system that keeps the machine tracking straight in forward or reverse, and the DuraTrax undercarriage that provides long life and a smooth ride," said Dan Drescher, product marketing manager, John Deere Construction & Forestry Company. "A significantly improved operator's station, more powerful engine and other enhancements make the 950J one of the most productive machines on the market."

A new, 10.5 liter in –line 6 cylinder engine provides electronic fuel management, 247 net horsepower and six percent more torque than the previous engine. The higher horsepower and torque results in 28 percent more drawbar pull, allowing the machine to move more material in less time. This machine's ease of operation and precise manueverability are the direct result of its full-featured hydrostatic drivetrain, which is controlled by a single joystick. The drivetrain allows the 950J to deliver power turns, infinite speed control, power management, and other productivity-boosting advantages. With an infinitely variable range from 0 to 6.8 mph, the operator can choose the right ground speed for the job. Maximum ground speed is controlled by a simple switch, and all available power is applied, regardless of the selected range. In addition, operating weight has increased by nearly 4,000 pounds, increasing the stability of the machine.

The 950J features new, more efficient 1050C-sized drive pumps, as well as four drive motors, similar to the 1050C. This delivers new high efficiency due to the fact that two drive motors are dedicated to each final drive, resulting in more steering power. Additionally, a new electronic control system allows the technicians to adjust the machine to the operator's preferences, as well as perform diagnostics on-site using a laptop. An early warning system alerts the operator to issues so that the machine can be serviced promptly.

The operator's station features numerous improvements that enhance comfort and productivity. A fifteen-degree angled seat, improved adjustable armrests, standard leg cushions, suspended style decelerator, two footrests and left and rear windows that open keep the operator comfortable for an entire day's work. The control lever features a shorter height and throw, which makes steering and forward/reverse travel even more intuitive and low effort. Speed selection is performed with the front rocker switch, similar to other J-Series machines. The dozer control lever also features shorter height and throw, with a button for optional hydraulic blade pitch. A brand new front-mounted monitor features larger indicator lights, an emergency indicator for critical areas, and a high visibility screen. More glass area improves visibility. A lunchbox holder and cup holder are standard.

Several changes to the tracks and blade enhance both productivity and uptime. The track frames have been redesigned to be similar to the 1050C. A reduced front idler diameter improves visibility, and more clearance between the track and the frame enhances clean-out. The tracks are available in two lengths—standard 117-inch with seven rollers, and 129-inch low ground pressure (LGP) with eight rollers. A new, 144-inch blade has tapered corners for improved visibility and redesigned curvature that enhances material rolling and carry, so the machine can move more material quickly. In addition, three mount locations for the blade tilt cylinder and pitch maintain a full tilt range. A hydraulic pitch option also is available. A variable pitch shank, parallelogram ripper can be angled on-the-go for optimum power efficiency.

Like all Deere dozers, the 950J's daily and periodic service points are grouped, and lockable service doors provide wide-open access to dipsticks, sight gauges, fill tubes and filters.

"In addition to being rugged, productive and durable, this machine is easy to operate and maintain," Drescher said. "It's an excellent fit for virtually any dozer application."
