New John Deere Excavators Set Standard for Productivity

MOLINE, Ill. (January 23, 2007)—For equipment owners looking to get even more done at less cost on earthmoving and material handling jobs, three new additions to the John Deere D-Series Excavators line—the 160D LC, 200D LC and 225D LC—are an ideal fit. These new machines retain many of the industry-leading features of their predecessors, but significant improvements—including faster hydraulics, a redesigned cab, undercarriage enhancements, and a new cooling system—deliver a boost in productivity and uptime, as well as lower daily costs.

“These excavators are particularly well suited to applications that require big performance in a mid-size machine, such as basement digging, truck loading, water and sewer jobs,” said Mark Wall, product marketing manager, John Deere Construction & Forestry Company. “They can do literally anything, with exceptional efficiency and smoothness, ease of operation, and comfort that’s second to none.”

The smallest machine in the line—the 160D LC—offers a significant increase in operating weight (4,500 additional pounds), horsepower, and capacities that give it a significant advantage over competitive machines, however it is still sized to fit on a tag trailer, according to Wall.

These D-Series machines feature a totally re-designed cab—with a fully adjustable suspension seat (an air-suspension heated seat is an option) and extra legroom—keeping operators comfortable and productive. Best-in-class visibility—including 47 percent more right-hand window glass and a larger roof—hatch area-provides a commanding view to the entire work area. Generous hydraulic flow and best-in-class metering ensure powerful digging force, precise control and multi-function operation. Shorter pilot controls result in smooth, predictable control with less effort and less fatigue. A control valve with regenerative features provides more efficient use of power.

A completely re-designed multi-function monitor features large, easy-to-read gauges, warning lights, and icons that provide operating information at a glance, and multiple languages accommodate a variety of operators. Easy-to-navigate screens provide access to warning messages, attachment preferences, and maintenance and service information. The cab continues to provide the popular standard features found in C-Series machines, including an AM/FM radio, a 12-volt port, a place for a lunch box, a hot-cold beverage holder and a large cup holder.

Key to the D-Series’ enhanced productivity is the faster hydraulic system, which boosts productivity, according to Wall. Additionally, a new Powerboost feature available in the 160D LC provides increased digging forces.

“Improved hydraulics ensure faster digging and more work per hour,” Wall said. “Drawbar pull, swing torque, lift capacity, and arm force have improved significantly, as well.”

The 160D LC and 200D LC feature John Deere PowerTech™ engines, which meet stringent U.S. EPA Tier III emissions requirements. The 225D LC uses a field proven Isuzu engine that also meets Tier III requirements. All of these engines employ a four-valve design that enhances fuel economy.

Unmatched reliability is another hallmark of the D-Series machines. The 160D LC and 200D LC machines feature a new cooling system designed to keep the engine and hydraulics cool in the toughest environments and high altitudes. The hydraulically driven cool-on-demand fan runs only as needed, reducing noise, fuel consumption, and operating costs. An optional reversing fan is available.

The 160D LC, 200D LC and 225D LC also feature several improvements to keep daily operating costs down and simplify maintenance. Service intervals have been extended to 5,000 hours on the hydraulic system. Easy-access remote-mount oil and fuel filters are located in the pump compartments, so they can be changed without crawling under the machine or removing access panels. Large service doors provide wide-open access to daily service items, and daily service points are grouped for quick access.

“Like the C-Series machines before them, the D-Series excavators are tough, reliable and economically smart to run,” Wall said.
