Planning Your VisitWhen John Deere moved from Middlebury, Vermont to Grand Detour, Illinois in 1836, it was the beginning of something very special for this Midwestern region. Soon after he arrived, he fashioned a "self-scouring" steel plow in his tiny blacksmith shop. In 1848, Deere moved his operations to Moline, Illinois and opened the first plow manufacturing plant on the banks of the Mississippi to make use of the river's power and take advantage of the shipping and rail opportunities the area provided. Today, John Deere's original factory is long gone, but his legend lives on here, and throughout the region. Come and witness it first hand at one of the many John Deere attractions.
