CLean tools live longer (Fall 2006)

What’s your favorite garden tool? Whether it’s an old hoe or a new garden trowel it will last longer and work better if you take good care of it in the off season.

Here are some tips from Jennifer Reinbrecht of Colorado’s Master Gardener Program. Use water to clean off mud, dirt, and vegetation. Attack stubborn gunk with a wire brush, if necessary.

Dry and spray metal parts with penetrating oil. Sand smooth any rough or gouged parts on wooden handles. Rub those wooden parts with boiled linseed oil. Store tools where they are safe and will stay dry.
