For years, Dwight Melius has relied on John Deere tractor technology to help him in his cow/calf operation where he grows corn, beans, and wheat. But when he first saw the John Deere IVT™, he’ll admit he was skeptical.
“My dealer took me out to the back lot for a test drive,” Dwight said. “We got up to 15 or 16 mph and he told me to throw it into reverse. I told him ‘I’m not going to do that! I’ll go through the windshield!’ But I put it in reverse, and I couldn’t believe how it came to a stop and backed up perfectly.”
Dwight bought the tractor with IVT, and after putting it through the paces on his operation, his skepticism melted away completely.
“We’ll grind hay for three or four hours at a time, and I used to feel it in my knees, pushing the clutch in all the time,” he said. “But the IVT is very smooth. It’s almost like driving your pickup down the road.”
Dwight’s son David agrees, and vows he’ll never buy a tractor that doesn’t have the innovative transmission.
“It’s just unreal how you can fine-tune the transmission to whatever you’re doing,” said David. “The left-hand reverser is great for loader work, such as dumping bales in a hay grinder. Then when it’s time to unload a feed wagon to a bunk line, you can fine-tune it to just crawl. This is the transmission of the future; we’ll never go back to a shifting tractor.”
