Deere makes great progress in Turkey

An example of aligned high-performance teamwork: John Deere Turkey

Deere & Company Chairman and CEO Bob Lane, Ag Division President Mark von Pentz and Vice President Stefan von Stegmann recently visited John Deere Makinalari Ltd (John Deere Turkey, JDTK) to meet with local employees. During the executives’ visit, the branch management presented the latest developments of the Turkish market, followed by an intensive dialogue of the senior officers with the employees. John Deere Makinalari was established in 2002 and assumed the role of a John Deere sales branch in November 2007.

Turkey represents numerous opportunities for agricultural equipment sales. Home for a great variety of agricultural products, the country takes great pride in ranking among the top 10 food producers. Not only is Turkey is a top producer of hazelnuts, apricots, cherries, quinces, pomegranates and figs, it also claims to rank 5th in sugar beet production, 6th in tobacco growing, 7th in barley and cotton cultivation and 9th in wheat production. Thus, annual sales of key equipment adds up to 32,000 tractors and 300 combines.

The newly introduced John Deere 7260 Cotton Picker for emerging markets John Deere Turkey played a pre-eminent role in mechanizing domestic cotton harvesting. Instead of picking almost 100 percent by hand, JDTK taught the farmers the benefits of mechanization and thus generated sales of 280 units of 9970 self-propelled cotton harvesters in only 4 years. Today, JDTK “owns” almost 70 percent of the domestic cotton picker market. A new picker is about to be introduced this summer: the tractor towed two row machine was named “Emerging Market Picker”, EMP, and is being introduced as John Deere model 7260.

Having reached 10 % of the country’s tractor market in April for the first time, Turkey is now selling John Deere products from India, Brazil, Mexico, US, France, Italy and Germany. The young Branch sees itself among the top three suppliers of the domestic agricultural equipment industry.
